The Ergo you obtain by defeating a boss is extremely valuable. Players will eventually be able to use these to exchange them for special Weapons and Amulets.

Puppet-Devouring Green Monster Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Puppet-Devouring Green Monster:

The Puppet-Devouring Green Monster shares a similar attack sequence as the first variant of the boss, bringing back the Charge attack, & its regular thrashing and smashing.

Green Monster of the Swamp (Phase 1)

The Green Monster of the Swamp opens up a few opportunities to strike. Once in a while, it will let out a screech that will allow you to approach and aggressively attack. Most of its attacks are similar and it has a limited set of attacks that involve its hands. The Monster does a lot of swiping, sweeping thrashing, and smashing with its hands. These attacks are melee attacks that affect the area directly in front of the monster. Always watch its arm movements and react as soon as its arm starts to lift in preparation for an attack. The monster has the ability to inflict Decay with one of its quick swipes. If the monster looks briefly idle and focused, it will soon whip out its antennae that will also inflict decay so get ready to block or counter this action.

If you keep a distance, the monster can also charge at you and proceed to trample you if you don't get out of the way. One hard one to avoid is when the Green Monster descends into the swamp. You will need to pay attention to its path seen on the ground and try your best to run away from it because it will lead to a surprise attack from underneath. Watch for openings in between attacks and change it when it stands upright. Play aggressively throughout the fight and it should be cleared quickly so that it can proceed to the second boss fight that will follow when it merges with the remains of a puppet. You will soon face the Puppet-Devouring Green Monster.

Puppet-Devouring Green Monster (Phase 2)

You can share the same attack strategy when approaching the monster in this phase. It will still rely on its punch and clawing the majority of the time. Similarly, watch out for any wind-up or any indication of a raised arm in preparation for an attack and dodge them. This time, the puppet limbs will allow it to leap further distances, so you will need to pay extra attention as it repositions around the arena.

Play aggressively when you get in range and block as it raises its arms. You should be able to knock it down and follow up with a few back-to-back strikes before finishing off your attack with a fatal blow.

Puppet-Devouring Green Monster Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Backhand Floor Swipe The monster makes a backhand attack close to the ground in front of it Block or back up and dodge
Decay Swipe The monster flings its arm and inflicts decay on those in contact As the monster raises its hands, get ready to react.
Underground attack It dives into the swamp and moves underground and releases an attack from the ground Watch the path of the monster and move out of its way before the attack; alternatively, once the monster begins to dig, immediately sprint as far away as you can and the monster will surface far enough away where their attack will miss you
Smash The monster throws both its hands on the ground Run out of range or dodge behind the swamp monster
Antennae whip The monster's antennae has the ability to whip out and inflict decay Block these attacks to avoid decay
Charge Attack The monster charges forward and tramples any being in its way.  Run out of the monster's path as soon as it begins its charge. It will not be able to change directions.

Quando eu comecei a Boss fight com ele, já pensei: "esse Boss vai ser difícil". Aí a luta começa.

I actually found phase 2 of this one far more fun and a bit easier overall than the first phase version, it's a fun twist on a boss which I'd really enjoyed the first time around. The tentacle attacks for phase 1 kinda threw me off a bit. If you're having trouble, the phase 2 charges are always in a trio, you can dodge them by sprinting sideways, and they leave a big opening at the end. Also the upside down attack doesn't really chase you down very well. The rest of it is mostly just Scrapped Watchman attacks with altered pacing or a little tentacle whip mixed in.

Eventually got that trash withtout summoning a specter.
So keys to the fight imho. Save your thermites and fire buffs for the 2nd phase.
Phase 1 is basically dodging time with you trying to get behind the back of the beast. Roll through its digging attack.
Phase 2 is a lot harder. The key here is to actually stay in front of the beast and perfet parry its attacks to inflict damage. I used my fire buff after I caused some damage so it would be still on for the critical hit after it has been staggered.
Don't stay in the back of the beast when its in a crab position, it's unmanageable (at least for me). Retreat and reset.
I eventually favored a slow hard hitting weapon (the bone saw +6) that made the fights somewhat shorter.
In the end a pain in the a** because the tells are not that great and the learning curve for the 2nd phase is too steep.

Out of every boss this is the one I had the least fun playing against, also most tries taken to beat. The 0.2 sec tendril stab was unavoidable. Didn't have trouble with his 2nd form much, just move away when it rotates its body, and it is smooth sailing. Getting to the 2nd phase was a drag however.

dunno why people dislike the semi reused moveset, this thing is horrifying especially after the lore revelations about puppets and ergo. that's what captivated my attention the most. also I think he's cool I like how he's green

This is the boss that made me really hate all the phase 2s/transformations in the game- not because of Puppet-Eater itself, but it being some bizarre, horrifying swmp monster unlike anything else we see- it getting a second phase transformation would've been a great OH **** moment... if it wasn't expected due to every schmuck in Krat doing the same.

                  Worst boss by far.

First phase: If he uses his tentacle grab/acid spit and you get decay, it's gg unless you're willing to pop an antidote on every attempt. Can barely get any damage in on him because he constantly goes up on his hindlegs which makes him very hard to hit even with a giant weapon like the Holy Sword. Parry windows are generous at least.

Second phase: Absolute bullshit. It's a rehash of the second boss but way worse. He attacks too often and too fast, deals an obscene amount of damage (I have 550hp when I fought him and single hit would do at least 40% of my hp or more), his parry timings are completely unfair outside of his rehashed second boss attacks (which he RARELY does), and there's his charge attack which is impossible to avoid if he does it point blank. All of his attacks have crazy reach and his ridiculous amount of jumping also makes him a pain to hit. The worst part is when he swaps sides and you get spammed with tentacles. You better hold block and I hope you have the right armor pieces equipped to resist decay or else you're screwed.

Also, why does every boss now have two health bars?

                  • Anonymous

Had to cheese this guy with the charge attack of Romeo's Scythe. Even so, it's was a tought fight. The charge attacks are a joke and he hits like a truck.

                    • Well, the first phase can be done hitless , almost perfect, especially with good timing using Frozen Feast and stagger grindstone. But the second one is pure BS. Absurd physical defense boost, broken AF charge attack that can lire you to one shot inescapable state, movesets of Murphy are identical but have a slight delay upon execution which means that you have to forget what you've already learned. Gave up if trying git gud and wiped him using spectre as a bait dummy. However the aggro of this mf is broke as well, which means that while he hits the spectrum and you try to break his posture with heavy from behind, this mf immediately targets you and activates his charge attack or grab or tentacle slash. Definitely can be done hitless as well but imo not worth losing thy time.

love how it just one-shots you with its broken charge and absurd hitbox, the bosses in this game just get worse and worse, once i'm done i am trashing this game, not even gonna bother with whatever DLC they are cooking

                        • Anonymous

Yep, I think I'm done with the game. First phase is easy, second phase I can't do anything. I spent like 50 star fragments and haven't even come close. Now I don't have any more fragments and I'm basically done.

NG+ phase 2 has way too many HP, I had to wait for an attempt where I got it down to the last 4k, or so than finish him off with all 8 electric blitz throwables I was carrying. Also used blitz on my weapon in phase 2 and the cube set to replenish. Best advice is protect Spectre so he stays a distraction and try to stay behind his attacks to hit him while he's engaged,

                            • Anonymous

Using the Electric Sharpening Stone for Phase 2 helped (not sure if it's too helpful for NG+). It allows you to take him down to half life quickly and stagger; it's much needed breathing room.

"It will not be able to change directions" my ass, bro keeps smashing his head on the wall and catches me no matter what lol

                                • Anonymous

this boss wrecked me when i first saw him in ng. it's definitely one you have to learn, but once you do, you can no hit his first phase and pretty easily take down his 2nd phase with patience.

                                  1. his underground dig can be avoided by sprinting away as soon as he begins to dig, once he surfaces, he'll miss and you have time to let off a combo or 2 full charged heavies;
                                  2. his fury charge can be perfect parried right when he's roughly 1 meter from you, staggering him and allowing for a charged heavy;
                                  3. for his left smash, right smash, both arm fury smash combo: parry the first two swings and strafe or roll around to his side when both arms are in the air and he'll miss you allowing you to punish him;
                                  4. when he does a little head shake, he's about to swing his antenna and shift himself back, here you can roll back as soon as he does his head shake and he will miss;
                                  5. he does a long range poke with his antenna which never hit me, just stay mobile by strafing and this will almost always miss;
                                  5. for phase 2: has a similar move set as scrapped watchman, so parry his twirly arm combo including the fury attack but stay directly in front of his head when you do so that he misses the follow up tentacle swing, here you will be able to punish with a charged heavy
                                  6. his charge in this phase is the same, except he'll continue doing it for 3 "runs" unless you perfect parry, which you can and should do when his face is about 1 meter away from you.
                                  7. dodge roll toward his jumps until he settles down, each jump gives you the chance to create some distance and reset

hope this helps and best of luck, he was a super satisfying boss to defeat.

For NG+ I had to respec my health from 30 to 57 for the second phase. Could almost perfectly get through the first phase. But missing a perfect guard in the second phase when he does the flailing thing absolutely one hit me all the time. Used the Two Dragons sword.

Am I the only ond who actually likes this boss? I love that it takes inspiration from previous bosses (namely Watchman, Archduke and KoP)

                                      • Anonymous

I think the biggest problem of this boss, and the reason so many people hate it, is it's inconsistency. I fully expect it to be a run-killer in speedruns.

Sometimes, he'll just do his punches that are mind-boggingly easy to parry, and sometimes, it will refuse to ever stay in melee and constantly jump back use it's tentacles and charge.
The charge can be perfect parried. The timing is weird but it is possible.
I think the problem with the second phase is pretty much the same. It's really inconsistent.

Overall, it's not extremely difficult, but I understand why people get frustrated here.

Scrapped watchman on meth. Hardest single phase in the entire game imo.

Hard to read attacks, every hit does a pulse cell's worth and more. Just ****ing hard.

I killed him in 2 tries first time around. But in ng+ he's terrible. He kills my specter as soon as he enters phase 2, even with friendship wishstones, and then grab attacks and instantly removes all my health, even when I am on nearly full health. Him on NG+ is annoying, but I might just be used to the cakewalk that NG+ has been

For Phase 2, the Charge Attack is what will make or break you. If you can perfect guard it, it knocks him down. If you can't, you are in for a world of pain. And sometimes this move gets glitchy/cheap and he traps you against a wall and pulverizes you with it into paste. In NG+, this guy has way too much health and is more tedious than he really should be.

i think the fight is fine. first phase is easy, even. the attacks are very well telegraphed. the second phase is a bit harder with its damage but at this point the player should be able to wield a +9 weapon so..

                                                • Anonymous

When I first encountered this boss I hated it, but after an hour or so of practice it became my favorite in the entire game. It was the first boss that forced me to get better at perfect guarding and using charge attacks to stagger it. Up until this point I had been able to skate by the early game using normal guarding/rolling and brute forcing each enemy/boss by spamming my light attack. The arena is a little claustrophobic, especially when he does his mad dash around the arena in phase 2 but other than that I really enjoyed this boss.

                                                  • Anonymous

I'm a little unsure about what I'm suppose to do with this guy. I think this may be a "please respec your build" boss.

                                                    • Anonymous

first boss I had to use a specter on. NeoWiz dropped the ball on this guy, especially the grab in second phase. Not every boss needs a second phase.

Whoever designed this stup*d boss devs deserve to be punched in the face.

Bullsheet extending arm, delayed adjusting attack, stupidly high HP, homing attacks, debuff.

Whoever you are you dcking devs, F U foverver.

whoever let this boss make it to the release version of this game should be fired. It combines every single "fake difficulty" mechanic into one boring boss that takes three times as long as it should.

This fight was fun, BUT would be more enjoyable if the arena was just slightly bigger. It's so easy to get cornered and if the boss does its unblockable charge move while it's close to you and while you're near the edges you're kinda ****ed. The same goes for his attack where it goes underground and burrows back up, as well as the one where it spits its splooge at you. I found out the hard way that the splooge attack stun-locks you if you get directly hit.

                                                            • Anonymous

Phase 1: incredibly fun, thought out, well-balanced fight, with a measured moveset and great parry potential. One of the best.
Phase 2: reused boss moveset with added flailing, incredibly overtuned, alot of health, a multi-hit charge the half the size of the arena, and can 2-shot you in NG+. One of the worst.

Somehow he's the best and worst of LIes of P, at the same time. Summons should never feel mandatory to make a fight manageable, but this guy's phase 2 in NG+ does.

                                                              • Anonymous

I can just say, than others, i liked this boos so much. You can learn the moveset pretty well and you use so many ways to dodge his attacks. Phase 1 is a rushdown, because so many moves he uses (Slams, dig, run, 4 hit combo) let open to a big attack window. Phase two is a more complicated first Scrapped Watchman and the dash can be wiffed. Just the crap grab is way to fast to react to. But it was fun to fight and learn the boss. The Healthbar is fine too.

                                                                • Anonymous

This was a nice palate cleanser boss after Victor. His grab can be a little frustrating if it lands just due to the sheer obscene amount of damage it does, but everything else felt pretty fair and well designed. Although I do think that the arena could've been a little bigger.

The Tyrant Murderer Blade with the City Longspear Handle felt great during this fight. A corrosion resistance Converter will make it a lot easier to not get Decayed. You can also use Thermite (phase 1) or Throwing Cells (phase 2) to deal decent damage to the boss from a distance.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Nice boss, but I hate the environment and his collision. Would have killed it faster, but I had 2-3 attempts where I just got pushed into a corner or against a wall, and his giant hurtbox model just sat on me to death, from full hp and all my potions lol.

                                                                    • Anonymous

booster glaive blade works well for tech builds with it's charge dash and high guard damage negation. also on his 4 swing combo with the delayed overhead swing you can block the first strike, dodge attack on the second, and while he's delaying the overhead swing on the 3rd you should still have time to block, then the fourth comes out quickly so it's safer to block that as well. in the second phase I used the fulminis legion arm at level 3; when he starts using the scrapped watchman move with the 3 arm swings followed by his weird rotary arm strike, the head tentacle move right after is one opening to use it assuming you're close to him. then while he's staggered is another. also if he ever charges at you from too close i've found that backdashing before blocking helps. and finally on his death grab the queue is when he's standing upright with his hands up, he'll take three little steps while doing so- dodge on the third step. hope this helps.

                                                                      • Anonymous

After getting completely demolished in phase 2, beat with a specter on my first try. Not trying to brag here, just making a STRONG recommendation! Specter it up!!

                                                                            • Anonymous

As for dodging his grab, pray?

                                                                              • Anonymous

This fight reminded me so much of the ape fight in Sekiro. He’s quick and aggressive, but giving him space removes a lot of that advantage.

                                                                                • Anonymous

This boss was the most egregious example of what I feel is actually the biggest problem with combat in this game, where despite you wielding a giant weapon that’s like seven feet long and weighs twenty pounds, you can’t freaking hit anything. The first phase always moves jjjuuusssttt out of reach or stands up and can either hit you from twenty feet away, or because you whiffed so hard when they stood back slightly, you’re stuck in the attack animation and jjjuusssttt miss getting your weapon up in time for the perfect parry. Combine that with the huge health pools and these bosses are actually easier solo on NG+, because of your maxed weapon and stats. That doesn’t seem right.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Played hyper aggressive against the first phase using the fire knife head on the clockwork sword handle (with 30 mot/20 tech). Parry the big falling attacks and the swipes, EXCEPT when he roars. When he roars, parry the first two arm attacks and then move to the right. He will always miss you with the third swipe and fall attack, leaving him very open. If he's just standing there looking at you, block and start moving backwards, because he'll probably use his spike attack or spit sludge at you, either of which will cause decay. Using the fire knife weapon art will make this phase quicker, but as long as you're not tanking the sludge and spike attacks to the face and block or parry the falling attacks, you can probably save your fable meter for the second phase.

Second phase, I switched to the great sword (on its default handle) and used an electric grinder on it. I found this did WAY more damage than the electric mace, and the longer range on its thrusting R1 helped me get hits very consistently. For this phase I played more conservatively. I would basically chase him around when he jumped and land one poke R1 each time. Sometimes I would bait his dash attack because it's easier to parry than most of his stuff and leaves him open to a swipe or two. When he does that crab walk attack, block and move back just enough to be out of range. He'll do what looks like a wind up to something after it's overe, but he's just switching his arms out to his humanoid ones. This is a good opportunity for a charged R2. His puppet master long wind up slams are pretty easy to parry and you can get a single R1 out in between them, so take advantage of those. If you focus on these three sets of moves and just stay out of his way for the rest, poking every so often, you will wear him down pretty quickly. If your damage is unsatisfactory, bring extra electricity grinder items to keep the buff up, and drop an electric canister on the ground when he's finishing up the crab walk or any other move where he's open for a long time (or right after a stagger). Obviously throwing the electric charges works too.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Idk if I’m doing anything diff, seeing as how many are struggling. Stats: Vit 31/ Vig 20/ Cap 21/ Mot 5/ Tech 25/ Adv 6

Try to feel where stats are needed as you go. It’s a balancing act. Health goes a whole lot further with proper dmg negation. Increasing damage output means shortening fights, lessening the # of attacks you have to withstand etc.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

The last boss was a walk in the park, and this one is the most frustrating boss yet. Whenever it's two phase, the second phase is ridiculously aggressive. God forbid you just block, one combo will wipe half your healthy anyway, in which you have time for to get some health back. Probably be less frustrating if the timing on the perfect guard was a bit more forgiving, but the window is so small I mostly either get stuck blocking or miss it altogether.

It's bosses like this that suck the fun out of the game.

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Just beat it after only a few tries with the Holy sword of Ark using glaive. Easy way to do it is just use a specter for aggro and spam heavies for staggers and abuse rally. First phase goes down quick and second phase just involves dodging those big runs and then blocking/parrying the hits in the midst of attacking.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

As soon as phase two started I used my grinder to apply Shock damage. Then I hit a crucial fatal blow and it was ggs.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

I've spent about 3 hours on this guy, got so used to his moveset I could actually almost no-hit phase 1.

                                                                                                    Here's what I learned:

                                                                                                    Phase 1

Dig underground - stand in place, time your backstep. You'll dodge the move and get a lot of damage in. Most consistently punishable move, and P will track the target consistently so no need to lock on immediately.

4 piece poke - it has a minimum range, so if you chase it down it goes over your head. The tell is a specific audio cue, but if you don't notice it watch for when its head shakes. Dodging backwards means you might get clipped by one, but its unlikely to fully decay you.

Stab pull - the tracking is pretty crap and the hitbox is smaller than it looks. I've accidentally dodged this move a lot, so just remember to keep strafing and it'll whiff.

4 piece combo - dodge to the left twice after the overhead (2nd swing) which gets you out of range of both the followup slam and the one-handed sweep. Enough time to land 2 free charged heavy attacks.

Decay vomit - the stomach becomes a hitbox, so you cant stay there to wail on the boss without being stunlocked into decay. The recovery time is long, so throwables or puppet string attack could work. The decay pools don't linger so you're good to attack once the animation ends.

                                                                                                    Phase 2:

Rushdown - The watchman charging attack is best deflected on initial charge, stopping the 3 bull rushes altogether. But if you dont deflect it, the 3rd red charge can be avoided by strafing hard to the side - make sure you have enough space to run. Run to a wall to clear space on the other side if needed. The red particle effect lingers a lot longer than the active hitbox, so you can wail on him the moment he's rolling around.

Multipoke - The cue is his entire torso swivels around, putting his puppet arms at the back. This attack is always to force you to back up, and he'll never chase you down with it. The recovery is long enough to throw about 3 projectiles or land a whole puppet string attack.

Pincer grab - the cue is that he will walk up to you with his back straight, limbs down. It hits in a narrow cone, which can be iframed through. I dodged to the side and hit him twice, so recovery speed wise it's punishable.

Spinning limb slam - same timing as normal watchman, but it's now a 4 hit combo. The tentacle hits after the overhead slam, hitting the sides of where his arm would reach. Either stay at the head or by his feet to avoid it. If you failed to deflect the red attack stay where you are, don't panic dodge into the decay sweep.

Hope this helps. Not seeing many other tips for this encounter. Good luck.

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

Can you imagine if every other boss in FromSoft games had a second health bar? I'm mostly enjoying this game but seriously, COME ON.

                                                                                                      • The multi run charge attack he does is uneeded. I really think if they wanted to make people use deflect and block like sekiro they should have made it just as forgiving. That was the key point from had in making a game around it.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

If you manage to beat it congratulations. But I can bet my left hand you won’t be having fun while doing it.
