Golden Lie is a Special Weapon in Lies of P. Golden Lie is a weapon that cannot be disassembled, it is a secret weapon that can only be obtained if you meet the required conditions. Boss Weapons or Special Weapons are weapons derived from the unique Bosses encountered in Lies of P. These are acquired by providing boss-type Ergo items to a special merchant, Alidoro.

A mystical wooden rod obtained from the boy's portrait.

Fascinatingly, it extends and retracts at the whim of Geppetto's puppet.

"There are two kinds of lies. Yours is the lie that makes your nose long."

The boy loved the fairy tale about the wooden puppet's adventure.

At least the wooden puppet's father was kind.

Where to Find Golden Lie in Lies of P

To obtain this secret weapon, you must raise your humanity through lying, listening to records, solving riddles and other such events. There is a limited number of ways to raise humanity, making it possible to permanently miss this weapon. The following conditions can be followed to ensure you acquire this weapon. Please take note that the instructions listed below follow the path of unlocking the true ending, "Rise of P":

  • Tell Lies during Lie System Scenarios
  • Solve riddles asked by the King of Riddles
  • Defeat Eldest of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood
  • Find the "Portrait of a Boy" in the Black Rabbit Brotherhood hideout
  • Give the Portrait of a Boy to Geppetto in Hotel Krat
  • Raise your humanity to the point where the nose growing from the Portrait of a Boy is glowing. Interact with it to obtain the weapon
  • If you perform every possible action to raise your humanity, the earliest point you can receive this weapon is Chapter XI, after meeting the King of Riddles and telling him you are Human

The Portrait of a Boy can be found at the Malum District Town Hall Stargazer in Area 5 after defeating the Eldest of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood. The portrait can be located inside the hideout of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, it's inside the room that's on the left of the entrance and next to the stairs. Please check the notes section of this page for more information.

Our Lie System page covers all of the dialogue scenarios where P is given the option to answer with a lie or truth.

You can click on the first two images below to enlarge them. These images point out where the painting can be found. The last image shows how the weapon will appear on the painting inside Geppetto's Study at Hotel Krat if you meet the conditions.

Golden Lie Notes & Tips

  • Other notes, tips, and trivia for Golden Lie in Lies of P go here.
  • Telling only lies is what we recommend since this weapon is a representation of what happens if Pinocchio lies and why it appears as a long nose in the portrait (just like in the fantasy novel). Some have shared that they've acquired this weapon by not just telling lies in their playthrough, but it's safe to say that for the majority of the lie system dialogue lines, you must tell more lies instead of answering truths.
  • Additionally, some have shared that there is an instance that this weapon can still appear in the portrait even if you don't listen to all of the records. However, if it doesn't appear for your playthrough, we highly recommend finding and listening to more or all of the Records.
  • While listening to the records, a message will appear after each: "You feel warmth." followed by "Your heart is pounding."
  • This weapon's appearance resets at the start of every NG+, removing the golden leaves sticking out of the side and turning into a simple wooden stick. The leaves return as you accrue more lie points.

    • If you get this you owe it to Pinocchio to beat nameless puppet with this at least once. Brcuase it is essentialy P's signature weapon. Then it becomes proof of humanity vs the lies of humanity

Most people don't realize that your humanity level is visible on your stats page; it's the number next to the heart left of your 'required ergo' for next level up. I had 182 humanity, and could not get the golden lie. I told one more lie, bringing me up to 183, and suddenly I could aquire golden lie. Therefore, I think 183 is the minimum required humanity. Also I am pretty sure (not 100%) that 180 is the minimum required to get the long grey hair and good ending, but it could be slightly less.

Did my whole ng+ run with this. For the people that say it’s weak and underwhelming just learn how to use it better. One of the best weapons in the game. Flashy moveset. No issues with damage.
Also, did simon and nameless on my level 1 with it to prove a point.

          • Anonymous

I like this weapon. I killed the Nameless Puppet with it because it seemed fitting. Took me god knows how many tries, though...

            • Anonymous

Used PoH for the entirety of NG+ until running into a wall at the nameless puppet. Then went to this and won on the second try. It's so damn fast and I was just racking up damage in the second stage even in the small windows you have to attack. Good weapon for sure

              • Anonymous

its not as "Powerful" as most other weapons, but because of how fast and defensive it is, it makes it VERY easy to land consistent attacks, it works for both damage scaling attributes or a B in whichever you choose, it does slashing AND stabs while being a blunt weapon, so its great for more enemies than you may realize, its also one of the only weapons in the game that lets you do good damage with blunt stab attacks, AND you can still buff it with grinders and abrasives, and considering how many times it can attack in chains, youll stack statuses in no time flat.

                Dont underestimate this weapons versatility....

I spent the entire game trying to make a cool quarterstaff weapon combination, only to beat it and have one quite literally drop on my lap hahahahaha

                  • Anonymous

Got it I think around the time I gave Sophia peace. I picked every humanity/lie option except when I told Alidoro to come to the hotel and I didn't lie to the merchant before BRB. I did every quest through to getting all available records that you can get in a NG run and listened to all of them as I got them(I didn't realize until a few records in that it was affecting my humanity. I just wanted to listen to them). Quests in this game aren't so convoluted as a Dark Souls questline and don't need you to really go out of your way for them, so you can get the vast majority of your necessary lies and humanity by doing them. You get the better rewards and records from choosing the humanity/lie options in them

Based on the evidence I've seen from my own experience and other users, I've come to the conclusion that unlocking the Golden Lie weapon from the portrait comes to whether you meet 1 of 2 criteria.

                      1. Lie a set number of times (this is about 7, in my estimate. I need to do a run specifically to ID the number)
                      2. Have Maximum Humanity (You've gotten "Your Heart is Pounding" 3 or 4 times, depending on the Humanity actions taken)

My own experience included my initial run having high Humanity (not max) and being unable to acquire the weapon and my first NG+ run having lower humanity (no grey hair when giving Sophia peace) but still unlocking the weapon. I saw someone else attempt a locked Golden lie, then obtain humanity through 2 records (both included "Your Heart is Pounding"), and was then able to get it. So this is a situation of "one or the other". And it's entirely possible to get the Rise of P ending without being able to unlock the Golden Lie (such as my first run).

Back on Oct 4th i made a post calling this funky little stick a 4/10. Either in a fit of madness or sheer masochism, i decided to do my entire NG+3 run with only the combat staff. And I'm gonna be honest, doing a run with only the stick made me appreciate not only this game’s combat more but it also made me rethink my stance on this weapon after pushing it to its limits.

Only used base legion arm, no specters for boss fights, and no throwables.

the combat staff not only has incredibly fast lights, it also has a different heavy attack depending on if you used a light before starting your combo. Starting charged heavy is a double spinning sweep, while a charged heavy after a light is a flurry of jabs. The uncharged versions are a single sweep or a jab into a upwards swipe. The swipe heavies seem to do more stamina damage (don’t quote me on that) while the jab heavies are better for damage and applying any statuses your applying. Along with a strong combo game, the running light is a lunge that can close the distance while still giving you time for a combo.

With this many options for combos, you can start to learn what combos you can throw out to to punish different enemies/bosses. But this things biggest strength in combat is its frame data. Your lights can come out so quick that you can start throwing out lights while bosses are doing their own combos. Turns bosses like KoP, eldest brother, and lightning mommy into some of the most enjoyable fights in a souls-like i’ve experienced.

A side note: i unironically think the legion arm that pairs best with this is just the base arm.
The base arm lacks a way to close distance which is covered by the sprinting light of the stick. The frame data on the arm is also great, allowing you to mix punches into your combos for extra stagger and damage.

The best way i could describe this weapon for people who’ve played other souls titles is a fancy redesign of the fist weapon class. Close range, strong combo game that excels at punishing enemies at times that other weapons physically couldn’t get away with.

And so i bump this had boy up to a solid 7/10. Takes skill and dedication to get value out of it, but its playstyle is addicting.

Just wondering i havent looked into this much but i TRY to lie in most occasions i listen to a good amount of records but the only thing that comes to mind that i would did wrong is not lieing to aldiro the boss weapon guy and i ineddiadly told him to go to hotel aswell not doing the stalkers salute but idk so i just need confirmation

So, I did everything right. Lied wherever I needed to and told the truth where it mattered. Listened to 9 records, gave peace to Sophia, killed nameless puppet (after 800 attempts), pet the cat, etc. But at the end of the game neither the stick nor the piano were glowing. Then I saw this comment about praying at the one winged angel statue. Then realised I didn't even have the pray gesture even though I did Cecile's quest. Seems like reading just the first page of her confession doesn't count. I got the gesture after reading all pages. Went and prayed to the one winged angel and villa! The piano was glowing and the stick was also glowing! Finally done. Amazing game, until you meet the nameless puppet. That one made me almost quit. The delays on P's animation recovery drives you nuts in that fight.

Biggest positive surprise when it comes to weapons in this game. Was sure that it's just a gimmick, now I'm mowing down NG+3 with it. It's a pure DPS machine if you set up your amulets greedily - the light attack combo is incredibly fast, safe and quite hardhitting. Fable arts are meh, but pair it with Arm of God amulet and you have a Fable-less playstyle that just pumps out damage. Poise damage from light attacks alone is good enough to reliably stagger anything. On top of that, the charging light attack is a great gap closer.

Biggest upside tho, the style. Thought it would be a, well, stick - it's a quarterstaff with martial arts-themed moveset.

Great weapon and i love the way you get it, but there should really be one for being more of a puppet than a human.

In this game it really gives you so many advantages and heavily pushes you to become human. From the trinity sanctums to the golden lie, i feel like the puppet gang should get some more love. Like an npc who only allows you into an area depending on how well you followed the rules of the grand covenant. And for a weapon for the puppets, i like the idea of it being called something along the lines of the "silver truth", so it could be a counterpart to the golden lie.

This makes it so that there are benefits to both sides and not just to those who wish on becoming a real boy. Puppet supremacy.

Just picked up this weapon right after beating Laxasia. Did every side quest and lied in all aspects and listened to all records. after the last record i listened to from antonia my heart was pounding and the weapon was available to grab.

                                  • Anonymous

I only noticed the nose getting visibly longer for the lies I told after getting the Portrait of a Boy. Things like listening to records DID seem to affect my Humanity, but did NOT seem to affect the progress towards the weapon. I didn't always lie, I missed a few chances, but still got it somewhere between meeting the real Sophia and the fight with Simon Manus.

                                    • Just to add my experience in earning this weapon, I told mostly lies, but not always (I told the Riddler that I was not a killer and I did tell Eugenie about her brother, for instance) and I listened to all the records I could get up to the point of beating Lactatia (9 total). In fact the record you get from Antonia's chair after you come back to the hotel was what sealed the deal for me, I had not even talked to Sophia yet after the Lax fight. Just how it worked for me.

                                      • Anonymous

On NG+ 2, using the Deus Ex Machina arm (for those oh so sweet set ups), and it seems to be still working like a charm for me. Sure, its not as hard hitting as some of the special weapons, but it makes up for it with how many times you can get attacks in. Fun to use, but not for everyone. Especially those that want a hidden OP weapon.

                                        • Cool, but sadly lacking in its premier gimmick on ever NG+ run- since it loses it's impeccable range at the start of all of them, and you don't build it back up until near the end- leading to the weapon only being at the peak of its power for a very limited amount of the game.

                                          • Anonymous

Defeated Laxasia and gave peace to Sophia, received first "heart is pounding" message. Listened to two records to see the message two more times, which unlocked the weapon for me.

                                            • Anonymous

I watched a yt video from “Gamer Guru” on how to max out humanity and followed it and then when I gave Sophia peace my heart pounded and I wiggled the cat, then I talked to geppeto inside of his cell at alchemist island, I got my heart to pound for the 2nd time and then picked the cat up and put him on my chest, then the golden lie was available for me to grab

                                              • Anonymous

I really wanna like this thing, i do. A combat staff sounds sick on paper, but good god does this things scaling suck. 40Mot/40Tec and its only getting 117 in scaling which is absolutely pathetic. For comparison, an UNLEVELED Etiquette gets nearly the same scaling bonus.

I can totally understand if the stick had innate crit, or grew in power the more humanity you gained throughout the game. But trying to use this thing past NG+ is a slog fest. Not to mention its average special fable that stops working the second an enemy hits you in the shoulder.

Atleast it grows and decorates itself along with P every time you start over? Idk, i wanna like this thing but it feels more like a handicap than an endgame/NG+ weapon. 4/10

IGNORE THIS IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS

Just like the other guy noted about what he did and what you dont really need heres when i got this weapon on a ng+ playthrough going spefically for that cause i didnt get it on my first playthrough:
BIG NOTE before i go on. The earliest you can get this from what i've found is after you beat Laxasia, you could lie more to alidoro and get it a tad earlier maybe, but yeah around that point is where you can get the weapon. This is the fastest way of getting this weapon without having picked a single choice for any ending afaik. Im not really sure if you have to actually tell the truth to everyone to get the free from puppet string ending.

-Lie to everyone obviously (you can tell alidoro the truth at the cathedral about the hotel if you wanna have access to him quickly, or you can lie to alidoro 2 times max and tell Eugene the truth about her brother if you wanna do that instead, point is you can tell one truth if you wanna get this as early as possible. i just havent tested if lying to alidoro makes him mad or anything and if that has any impact on his shop)
-Listen to all your records (you need 8/9 so dont worry if you miss one or one bugs out, which happened to me cause i stopped one song before it ended and i couldnt get the humanity after that)
-MAKE SURE to lie to Belle cause you get a record plus humanity from lying
-MAKE SURE to lie to the Riddler on the last phone call, he still gives you the chosen ones key if you're wondering so dont worry, only with a twist.

Last tip, cause i found it to be VERY confusing, about Manus. If you choose to kill Sophia, you can LIE to simon later about what you did. That is why picking the "i liberated her" option on simon, gives you humanity, IF you have killed Sophia. Liberating her counts as letting her live, only freeing her from her prison. So if you kill her, telling manus that you freed her counts as lie. I was very confused on this part so yeah just letting this out there.

Sorry for the long read, i hope this helps you tho.

Chiming in to say I only got the "Your heart is pounding" message twice. This was also right after getting an achievement, so I'm not sure if that's related or not.

                                                    • Anonymous

The requirements state that seeing the message "Your heart is pounding" three times could be a trigger. This does not seem to be the case as I got that message twice and was able to obtain the weapon. I was also able to obtain the weapon before fighting Laxasia.

                                                      • Anonymous

Like some one said you get this simply by raising your humanity. I did not lie all the time or really try to. Only when needed. That means you do not need to lie all the time because some times to get humanity you need to tell truth to. You will know that you are on right track to gather a lot of humanity is your heart starts beating.

                                                        • Anonymous

You get this simply by raising your humanity. Once you get the messege "Your Heart is Pounding" three times, the weapon is available. There are NO OTHER pre-requisites to it becoming available. The earliest point I achieved this was after meeting the King of Riddles and telling him I was human.

                                                          • Anonymous

Legit, even tho my ergo was at the point of warmth at the end of the game, i still didn't get this thing, i bet i was like 1 or 2 lies away and because i didn't get it, legit left the most sour feeling and ruined finishing the game for me. I wanted to get it and use it in new game plus, then i can do a puppet run instead of going for humanity. The devs really screwed up on this one. I was never gonna do a 3rd playthru so i'm never going to get to use this weapon. Sure as heck ain't ever gonna recommend the game to anyone.

                                                            • Anonymous

lol I thought this thing was growing into a lever that would lead to a secret room in the hotel where Geppetto was gonna be like "So, you think you're a person now? Well let's see if you can beat this guy!" and then the Nameless Puppet was gonna show up.

                                                              • Anonymous

Fun detail about this weapon: if you get It in NG and then start NG+, since your humanity resets, its appearance will be reset too. Instead of fully developed golden flowers at the top and the bottom of the mast and the mast itself being covered in gold, It turns into a simple full wood staff in the shape of a nose (you can even see the nose holes at the bottom). The gold grows back in stages as you regain humanity (mine was all wood at the start of NG+ and halfway thru It has now a bit of gold on top and a single small gold leaf at the bottom)

                                                                • Anonymous

This weapon kinda sucks. It's fun to use, but it has an expensive, weak blade Fable Art and a surprisingly useless handle Fable Art. The handle's Fable Art only blocks normal strikes, not big heavy ones. Like, I'd understand if it didn't work through Fury Attacks, but most of an enemy's normal attacks will eat through it, making it useless.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

By far the best Str/Dex weapon in the game, fantastic moveset, comes out fast and has a very unique handle art. Range is great, like with any other spear weapon. Overall a big fan of it.

                                                                        • Anonymous

I haven’t beaten Simon or gave Sophia her peace yet so those requirements don’t matter. As far as lies go I the only truth I told was Alidoro to come to the hotel for safety. I have 9 records and have completed everyone’s side quest at the hotel and every NPC out in the wild.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Went back to the hotel and up to the room, and it was available. I had listened to all of the records it's possible to get in your first playthrough (so 10 of them), and had mostly lied, but told the truth a couple of times.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

After listening to her record it was lootable. Didn't have my hair turn gray, didn't beat the game yet. Seems you only need a certain amount of humanity to get it. All those things give humanity, but apparently I had enough before even getting to them

                                                                                    • I got Golden Lie after giving Sophia peace, which caused my hair to turn gray - Didn't have to wait until post-credits.

Receiving the message "Your heart is pounding" is not enough. Playing the piano perfectly (when it glows golden), is not enough. Getting the 'true ending' is not enough. All of these things combined IS NOT ENOUGH to get the weapon, as I've done all of them and I still can't get it, although the nose has fully grown. You MUST have told enough lies throughout the game, probably in combination with some of the above. I only told about half lies.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

I just beat the game, Told about a 70-30 split on lies and truth... missing 7 records... and still got the weapon. People are capping. Just hit the piano every time, play all the records you can get semi easily... and tell the odd lie now and then and you will get it.

On top of that, I've listened to every record you can get in NG right after getting each one, rather than all at once.

I did listen to all of the records that were available at the point, although I was just in the middle of listening to the last record that I had for the first time (the one you get after meeting the real Sophia), so I'm not sure if those have anything to do with it. Can provide a video of me getting the weapon if that helps too!
