King of Puppets Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for King of Puppets:

When the battle begins, walk toward the King of Puppets and he will begin his attacks. His first phase consists of a limited variety of attacks. The King of the Puppets will mostly rely on his punches, specifically a move where he needs to wind up and deals a powerful AoE blow to the ground directly in front of him. This attack can be anticipated or blocked though because of his obvious wind-up, which gives you a chance to clear out of the way before he follows through. If you don't manage to clear away, this attack can be blocked. Since he relies heavily on this action, it actually benefits the player since it is followed by a delay. He remains in a crouched position for a short period. So as soon as he starts winding up, you can plan ahead and try to get behind him to deal your follow-up attacks. You can also wait in front of him until this action is over and quickly run in to attack his arm as it touches the ground. Another common attack during this phase is the act of swiping his arm. He uses both his left and right arm subsequently to whack at the player. This can both be blocked. Given how slow the recovery and windup times are, you should reach the second phase in no time and may even open up multiple opportunities during the first phase to stagger. Keep an eye out for the glowing boss bar. Once it shows white, deliver a charged attack to stagger him and deliver all your combos while he is staggered. Look out for the follow-up fatal strike and hit him from the marked position to deliver a critical hit. You can continue to hit him until he gets back up and prepares for his next attack.

His second phase consists of more attacks with a larger range. You will need to reposition yourself a lot more to avoid getting caught in his attacks. He will be able to stir up a large AoE attack that also affects mid-range. To quickly get through the fight though, hug his ankles and attack between his attacks. Prepare to dodge or block at all times since most of his attacks will still be lockable. The King of Puppets will also be moving around a lot more during this phase so keep squaring up to him. If he prepares for a Fury Attack, get out of the way. He will glow red and slap his body then follow through by sweeping the floor with his arms which will cover a large space. At any time he has his back toward you, charge up your attacks, and aim at his feet. This will be a lot easier to do if you summoned a Specter for his fight. Throughout the fight be patient and allow his attacks to play out and have your block or dodge ready until you have cleared him. This fight will be followed up with another boss battle against Romeo, King of Puppets.

Since the boss fight extends to another boss battle, you can equip the Friendship Wishstone to your Cube to keep him around longer.

King of Puppets Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Drag A low sweep arching as the King drags his arm on the ground around himself in an arch. Will cause damage if you are at the front side of the King. Dodge away, or block this action.
Swipe The King swipes at you with his arms, with a forehand then a backhand attack This attack can be blocked. Get ready to block as soon as he pulls back his arms.
Wind Up Smash The King does a wind-up spin before following through with a powerful AoE punch to the ground. Step back away from his direct vicinity and get ready to run in to follow with an immediate attack. This attack can also be blocked.
Side Jump He supports himself with his arms and repositions himself, still causing damage if you are in his path.  Mirror him as he repositions. Just make sure you are not underneath him when he looks like he's about to jump
Phase 2
Thrash The King of Puppets wildly thrashes both of his arms Back away from his reach and allow this action to play out.
Drill Hands His hands begin to rotate like a drill before charging forward Back away.
Air Blast An AoE attack. The King of Puppets bends over and his upper body flips over, then he blasts out air. If you are within range of this attack, quickly distance yourself.
Tornado Spin An AoE attack. The King of Puppets' upper body spins and he creates a large tornado around him. Stay close to the King of Puppets and the attack will not hit you, giving you a large opening to attack.
Double Arm Smash The Puppet King throws both arms down in front of him smashing the area directly ahead. You will be able to block this attack.
Body Slam Sweep The King of Puppets throws his whole body and slams it on the ground with extended arms and follows through by sweeping both of his arms backward around him.  This can be performed as his Fury Attack.  Distance yourself since this attack will cover a large area and wait for the whole action to play out before approaching.
Sweep The King of Puppets extends his long arm on the floors and drags it while sweeping the immediate area.  Block this attack or back away from the area it affects.
Arm Swing Sweep The King of Puppets suspends himself up, supported by his arms as he slowly crawls forward with one arm at a time like a monkey, then follows through with an arm sweep.  This action is usually performed at a distance. Steer clear from underneath him and anticipate the last part of the attack. You will be able to block it.

This guy is NOT weak to Acid or Pandemonium contrary to the nonsense some of the comments are stating. He is highly resistant to acid and even Pandemonium despite his massive size, to the point it can take 3 and even 4 casts of Pandemonium before it procs acid once for a tiny DoT that wears off fast and has nothing left for the next boss. In fact, his natural high fire resistance is only a little stronger than his acid resistance. It just isn't worth it. Smash him with electric attacks and get the fight over so you can move onto the real boss.

      • Anonymous

Pandemonium completely melts this guy because he's so massive and slow he'll usually just stand in it until the decay procs and he's weak to acid too. Other lingering AOEs could probably do the same thing too, Pandemonium just fit my build particularly well. He does hop about a bit sometimes but that's mostly a part of specific moves and if you get up in his face he doesn't stray too far too often. Melting him with acid made it much easier to get him out of the way without getting hurt much so I could get to Romeo.

It's a good boss, marred by one severe design flaw - he smacks Carlo around the room like a pingpong ball. Even on a perfect parry, many of his attacks send you flying which makes it impossible to follow up and punish in the downtime.

He's not a particularly hard boss, but it's kind of like Elden Beast - what were they thinking having a boss that constantly runs away from the player?

          • Anonymous

Also you love the camera getting stucked in the wall and not letting you any view of the action.
Also the out of nowhere red glowing attack with no tell to finish you... it just feels totally random and unfair.
What's the message ? RNG till the boss behaves decently ?

            • Anonymous

              Another flawed design.
TF are those bosses weighing 10 tons and more speedy than your character ?
Able to 180° run away and charge back in a split second.
You wanna give small retaliation windows ? Do it properly and don't fool the player.
The more I play this game, the more it flaws are apparent.

First phase is easily one of my favorite bosses of all time. Amazing music and design, and fun intro. Second phase isn't terrible, but it kind of ruined the mystique for me and felt like a generic hard fight, music was less interesting too.

                • Anonymous

Wouldn't be that bad if this wasn't basically two bosses in one. Having to refight King of Puppets every time I die to Romeo is just tedious. Also, that flame move 95 hit combo is crazy, best strat I found for it is to just run and dodge towards the end.

What a joke. I get passed phase one without a scratch. I use the friendship wishstone so my Spector and I are near full health. I throw every object I’m holding at KoP at the beginning of phase 2 while the Spector is drawing his attention. I then use the electric grinder on my weapon, and even manage to land a fully charged attack. KoP then gets pissed, lights his weapon on fire, and even with me running around the area like Usain Bolt I can’t avoid his six! hit combo. What’s my reward for perfectly guarding all SIX hits? I’m left with a SLIVER of health comparable to the thickness of a single sheet of paper. After SIX perfect guards in a row…
Every single thing about this guy is an absolute joke. I almost wish KoP was the very first boss so I could have quit this game without wasting so much time and effort.
Congrats devs. You win. You can keep your ridiculously OP, borderline impossible boss, and I’ll move on to a game where I’m not banging my head against the wall for several days.

I loved everything about this game up until this guy. If the devs goal was to frustrate players enough to make them give up and quit playing, mission accomplished. And for the record I’m definitely not the only one who feels this way.

He has two "wind attack" the wide one is avoidable by sticking to him and the small one is avoidable by sprinting away.

Watched a no damage fight with this boss on Youtube and found the KEY for Romeo! Forget blocking for 95% of it, ONLY dodge behind him and try not to stagger him once he's past 50% so that he doesn't do the flame move. I died like at least 20x before doing this and ended up beating him first try doing this veryyyy easily. The video I watched was by "Esoterickk" if you're also having trouble and wanna watch it too.

"That's why I tried sending you messengers... but you got rid of them all."

What messengers? The puppets who tried to kill P on sight... ?

                            • Anonymous

Dropped this guy, and Romeo first try. Grab your summon, use Electric Coil Stick, charged heavies while Specter draws aggro. Phase 2, Heal Specter with Wishstone, kite Romeo until Specter draws Aggro, chuck about 5 throwing cells, then chuck about 5 carcass grenades.. sit and watch the cheese melt...

One of *the best* boss fights, hands down, especially when paired with Romeo afterwards. I'd had this hyped up as some nightmare boss fight pre-patch, but I had a total blast through it all. The King felt like a conglomeration of all the jumbo-bosses Lies had us fighting, but then Romeo was like I got teleported over to Bloodborne as a reward for beating the King.
That being said, goddamn those stretchy arms still throw me off sometimes.

It’s a pretty good boss fight, Romeo especially. But awkwardly for myself it fell into the category of a bit too hard spectreless (got him down to 10%, but usually the flames got me) and too easy with a spectre. Oh well!

                                  • i tried for several attempts to beat him solo, failed, summoned the specter, and honestly this is a dang good fight with an ally. one of the funnest boss fights so far in the game. romeo reminded me alot of penetrator in his moveset is very similar to a dance. and penetrator is probably my favorite souls boss. good stuff.

If you're a Motivity build, for phase 1, go to the Malus street Merchant. Buy Shot Puts. These are thrown weapons that scale off of Motivity and can easily take off 40% of his Phase 1 health. Unfortunately, you can only have 3 on your belt, but they're mad strong regardless

Why doesn't this mention the AoE attack where a spike comes out of the ground and sends you flying, even if you're dashing at full speed?

                                        • Anonymous

Omg STFU about the specters already Jesus. The devs put them in the game. They are not cheats, or exploits. You’re not anything special for not using them. You people going around telling your gf, bf, spouse, mother, friend whatever that you beat video game bosses without the use of a dev inserted mechanic? Seriously think about it. Literally no one cares.

One thing these souls game have to stop adding is bosses you have to chase down. I perfect parry everything just for it to send me 10 feet away. Or he jumps away after I do one slash or 2. Great Boss though.

                                            • Anonymous

Just like Fallen Archbishop Andreus this is two bosses in one fight and have huge HP bars. If HP for second fight would be a lot smaller it would be fine. But now fight just drags on. Fights like my look cool but they never are fun.

                                              • Anonymous

this boss is litterally just poor game design no openings second phase dead spectre by then for first phase you have to generally get lucky crazy damage numbers even with high hp absurd amount of posture this boss is more a fight with rng than anything theres been too many bosses like this the devs really should use theyre brains more in the next game

                                                • Anonymous

This has weird advice for his spinning AoE attack. For the one where he turns around and plants his arms into the ground you want to get away, but the AoE when his arms start spinning hits the whole stage, but it doesn't hit you if you're underneath him slashing his legs. Wish I figured that out before reading the wiki and dying to it once or twice lol.

                                                  • Anonymous

I don't know how, but I beat both phases first try, sure my specter died at second phase when the boss was low on hp, and I out of fear threw a saw blade at him that killed him

                                                    • Anonymous

I guess romeo is weak to acid so just apply some on ur weapon. And also try the guard parry ability on romeo. It did about 1,5k damage and it is possible to follow it up with a charge attack. So if u struggling try this method. Worked good for me and praise the sun.
