Romeo, King of Puppets Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Romeo, King of Puppets:

The fight against Romeo immediately follows the King of Puppets, the first phase of the fight against the King. Romeo wields a scythe and is able to easily close distances with his aerial leap attacks. He then can deal a number of different melee attacks with his scythe and quickly move around the arena with his agile dashing. If you play aggressively, especially with a Specter still around, you will be able to interrupt his attack animation and deny him the chance to retaliate for a short period. With an aggressive approach, you will also be able to easily stagger him.

As easily as he closes distances, he will also be able to quickly leap back to reposition. Don't chase after him. Wait for him to come back with his attack so you can react accordingly.  Since a number of his attacks are accompanied by swift leaps as he repositions, and quick advances, this could be difficult to anticipate his path so try your best to lock on and continue to face him while keeping on guard. If you manage to knock him down, you will be able to follow up with a Fatal attack, further depleting his health.

Eventually, you will also notice that flames will be added to some of his attacks. His scythe will burn up and he will aggressively release a flurry of burning melee strikes and slashes. These attacks can also be interrupted. If you have the time to deal a charged attack, deal one. Otherwise, interrupt it with aggression. There is a chance you can also stagger him during this period.

Try to maneuver around his advances and be conservative with your approaches. You will be able to slowly clear him until the fight ends.

Romeo, King of Puppets Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Leap Strike Romeo has the ability to leap a great distance and follow through with a swing of his scythe. Block or dodge this attack once you see it coming since his approach happens very quickly.
Scythe Slash He takes the slash and slashes from side to side. This can be delivered in a combo. Hold your defense until this attack set is played out.

Scythe Pull

Romeo's exposed eye glows red as he holds his scythe out, attempting to hook P's neck to pull you towards him before following up with a slash. Romeo can cancel into this attack from certain combos. Immediately dodge sideways when you see the glowing eye.
Hook Strike Romeo will be able to hook left or right and strike with his scythe from either side. Block any incoming melee attacks.
Fury Attack He begins to glow red as this action plays out then balances on his scythe and attacks upon landing. Dodge away from this attack or back up before he lands.
Jump attack Romeo jumps into the area and lands with his attack Dodge backwards or through him.
Aerial Spin attack Romeo Flings himself toward the target and ends the action with an overhead strike before yanking his scythe out. Both actions will deplete a lot of health Dodge away quickly
Fire Flurry A flurry of melee attacks laced with fire dealt as Romeo quickly advances. He will perform three triple slashes (jumping at you before each one) before performing one more large combo. Run away from him during the first three combos, then parry the last set. Alternatively, be extremely aggressive as he's igniting his weapon: use Fable Arts, Shot Puts, etc. to knock him out of the animation and prevent the attack entirely.
Fire Dash He will be able to dash and leave a trail of fire. You will need to anticipate his path and avoid walking into the flame trail he left.

Just in case anyone needs it, he becomes much easier if you simply dodge to his left (at least in my experience).

Yea this fight is brutal. Even with a spectre. I can definitely see this being the fight that makes some quit. Eventually i got him but wow does he move and strike fast

romeo is really good but given his difficulty relative to his placement in the progression in the game and the fact hes a phase 2 of a boss with a completely different moveset just sours me man

          • Anonymous

Is this guy a reference to Raiden in Metal Gear Rising? It's been years since I've played the game, but I swear a bunch of their moves are identical.

            • Anonymous

I was completely optimized for a particular greatsword. Fought this guy, kept losing. Switched to the electric baton that I'm completely not optimized for at all. Cut through him like paper.

It's not the first time I've had that experience in a souls-like. Sometimes, the best way to fight isn't what you're optimal for. That's my advice for this boss and all souls bosses.

For the fire flurry, the aegis shield knocked him out of it for me after attacking him once or twice while he was imbuing his sword with fire; simple, easy, instant. I was having trouble with the attack and kept on succumbing to it right until i remembered i had that arm equipped. After that Romeo mimicked his literary counterpart and bit the dust that same match.

                  Kinda proud of my strat
set a landmine for his plunge attack
roll in charged heavy and boom to stagger
                  follow up with fable art

What is this double boss bs. Having two bosses with completely different movesets back to back should be illegal

                    • Anonymous

The single, hardest thing about this boss that WILL **** you up, no matter what, is his 10 hit combo. Once you learn how to interrupt it, parry the whole chain, or mitigate most of the damage, you're basically golden and you've got it in the bag.
If you can parry that ten hit combo? You can do the entire fight. You got this.

                      • Another tip: He does mostly slash damage. So buy some liner from Pulcinella that specializes in slash damage reduction. If you explored the opera house fully, you should have found an item that enables him to sell upgraded versions

Nada é mais satisfatório que o Bloquear Perfeitamente o combo completo desse cara após ele amolar sua Foice deixando de Fogo, tentem me refutar

                          • Anonymous

Dodging to the left rather than the right almost trivialises his basic moves, and whacking him with a big bonk like the Big Pipe Wrench Head's fable art can knock him out of his Fire Flurry before he has a chance to swing at you.

I went from getting whooped by him to no hitting him just by applying those two tricks.

                            • Anonymous

If you can believe it, you can actually no dodge/parry the whole fire combo, infact Romeo is a boss that you can strafe almost all attacks on

                              • Anonymous

This boss was brutal. Appreciated all the tips on here. Perfect block the first phase (along with acid), stay moving and dodge the second phase. Save your big fable hit for when Romeo applies fire to cancel it, and then play SUPER aggressive before he tries again. Long, sometimes very frustrating haul to beat this one, but SO satisfying when I finally did! You got this!

                                • i tried for several attempts to beat him solo, but failed. then summoned the specter and still failed a few times, but honestly this is a dang good fight with an ally. one of the funnest boss fights so far in the game. romeo reminded me alot of penetrator in his moveset is very similar to a dance. and penetrator is probably my favorite souls boss. good stuff.

It's so ****ing mindblowing how perception of this fight changes when you advance in the story. It's just beautiful. Here Maestro is overshadowed.

Stolen idea btw, Nier:Automata had a simillar thing but those dialoges in NG+ just added an extra flavour for the most part. in Lies of P tho this tool is used masterfully

                                    • Anonymous

just dodge to your left and get behind him, this will force him to end his combos. then the only thing you need to worry about is the fury attacks and fire flurry

                                      • Anonymous

This is the boss that teaches you that this game isn't even exactly sekiro let alone bloodborne, you can't just parry everything unless you are a literal god. The best way to deal with romeo is to dodge to the side of his attacks, as his attacks don't cover that much space and he doesn't have the best tracking. Although having to fight the larger king of puppets every time does make this fight a lot more tedious, eventually it does become more like genichiro in the final boss, it's just a stepping stone to the real boss. I had a lot of fun with this one, just remember Parry the first phase and dodge the second phase

                                        • Anonymous

Been using shock to stagger him out instead of dealing w his phase 2 super fire combo. Even with a high guard weapon, it melts my stamina and the Over heat is cooking me. After I empty my stamina with attacks I throw 5 shock cells at him. I did t spend a point on advance, but all five devour like 20 percent of his hp, bonus shock and stagger if he was already shocked before with shock buff grinder. Throwing seems op in this game, the speed of throwing is very high.

                                          • Anonymous

romeo isnt too bad but can i just say how much i hate bosses like this and radagon from elden ring? its like taking a math quiz and then the backside is an english essay. you just put two completely different fights together and called it a day instead of making either boss have a good phase 2.

                                            • They should have made us fight the Big Guy in the "chandelier room" (with a full floor), and then have the romeo fight as a "apothéose" in the next room.
That way we get the Big Guy as a guardian for Romeo, which makes more sense than having Romeo inside another puppet, as we don't get an explanation for that fact.

                                              • Anonymous

If you attack him few times when he was preparing fire dance attack but didn't stager him you can use Aegis arm to block fire attacks and it can cancel out rest of the attack if he gets staggered from Aegis explosion.

                                                • Anonymous

With anyone having troubles with him take throwables and healing specter wish stone Into romeo fight after the first phase is done heal specter and kite him till he aggros specter then throw all the throwable sim about 11-12 he is dead ez pz and the legion arm that shoots bullet is great too for this

                                                  • Anonymous

I honestly don't think King of Puppets and Romeo would be that bad if you didn't have to fight them back to back.

Archbishop sort of made sense for 2 HP bars because it was the same guy. But KOP and Romeo are two completely different bosses with entirely different movesets.

As I got better with one, I found myself getting worse with the other. I would've much preferred either Romeo to either appear when KOP goes half health, or you just don't have to fight KOP again after Romeo appears. I would've been fine with either.

But having to refight KOP every time I died to Romeo was exhausting. I really dislike multiple health bars in Souls/Souls-like games.

                                                    • Anonymous

Be close to him and dodge his attacks around him and w8 for opening to attack and stager him and do crit attack. Repeat that until he dies.

                                                      • Anonymous

Romeo himself should have had more health and been a separate boss fight from his first form. One of the more fun fights but makes his first form more tedious and annoying to have to deal with.

                                                        • Anonymous

Personally what worked best for me to deal with the fire was to use a weapon handle with the fable art " Absolute Defense" with several fable charges on the ready. You need the fable charge bonus for this to work. Basiclly dont use your fable arts in the 2nd stage until he pulls out this bullshit fire move. Absolute defense is pretty cheap you only need like 2 charges to block the entire thing.

                                                          • Anonymous

Just beat this boss. The King of Puppets/Romeo were easily my favorite bosses so far. They were really fun to learn the patterns of.

                                                            • Anonymous

You can dodge the Firefowl Dance by dodging to the left at the right times, but spamming works as well. Tho you should try staggering him while he's putting his weapon on fire to cancel the attack

                                                              • Anonymous

If you are getting rekt by the fire flurry attack like me, you can actually stagger the boss while it is applying the fire thus canceling his move and the fire. I got pretty good at getting the boss to 50% (when he does the fire stuff), and having built up enough of the stager meter that a charged heavy attack would set up the boss for a fatal/visceral/critical attack. I found having a long thrusting weapon to be very useful in both phases. The R2/RT attack with the Holy Sword of the Ark in Glaive form is wonderful.

                                                                • Anonymous

You can stagger the boss out of his "applying fire" animation thus preventing his very strong string of fire attacks. It's pretty easy to achieve once you get a feel for how close the boss is to being staggered.

                                                                  • Anonymous

I guess romeo is weak to acid so just apply some on ur weapon. And also try the guard parry ability on romeo. It did about 1,5k damage and it is possible to follow it up with a charge attack. So if u struggling try this method. Worked good for me and praise the sun.
