Door Guardian Fight Strategy

The Best Tips for Door Guardian:

The Door Guardian is a giant much like Champion Victor who relies on heavy fist attacks that involve a lot of punching, smashing, and slamming. Some of these attacks will be laced with Shock, which can slowly decrease your Stamina when afflicted. These heavy attacks are usually slow-moving, making them easier to dodge. However, they are likely to knock you over if you get caught in them.

He has some large attacks that exert a lot of energy and will cause him to pause for recovery. At times his fist smash will follow with a brief period where his fist remains rested on the ground. Large attacks like these open up large windows for attack. In this position, you should be able to deal a charged attack, further knocking him over and giving you the opportunity to follow up with a Fatal attack. Bait his attacks and allow them to play out as you continue to dodge them or block them. If you can time it right, parry his attacks and then run in as he recovers to deal a charged attack or a combo of smaller attacks.

Since his mobility is fairly clunky, it will give you time to use your heavier attacks on him. If you get behind him, he will be forced to turn and face you all while you can squeeze in a few smaller standard attacks before his next incoming attack. When he repositions around the room, he will walk slowly or roll. Just just sure you are not caught in his path. This is a generally slow-paced fight so as long as you watch your Stamina if afflicted by Shock, continue to circle behind him and attack conservatively while saving your charged attacks in between his heavier attacks, you will be able to clear the fight.

Attacking the Door Guardian's smaller, unarmored leg will deal huge stance damage, causing him to fall over and allowing you to Fatal Attack him. Depending on weapon level and scaling, he can be defeated with 2-3 fatal attacks this way.

Door Guardian Attacks & Counters

Attack Description Counter
Hook swing A regular punch from the side. Block or dodge this attack.
Roll Mostly used as a repositioning maneuver, but will cause damage if you're in the way Run out of the path of the roll.
Uppercut Punch An uppercut punch delivered from below, punching upward. Avoid this attack by backing up as he pulls back his arm.
Stomp The Door Guardian Stomps down his foot. Dodge away backward and wait for his follow-up attack.
Smash With both fists, The Door Guardian throws his fists on the ground in front of him. Quickly dodge this attack by backing up or running to his side.
Jump Smash  A jump that lands with his fist on the ground.  Dodge back away from the landing area.
Sweep The Door Guardian drags his fists on the floor in a sweeping motion This attack can be blocked or guarded.
Body Slam Fury attack The Door Guardian throws his body and slams his side on the ground, knocking you over if you're in the way. Run out of range. Fury attacks cannot be dodged so you will need to distance yourself or counter with a perfect guard.

The only fight in the game I genuinely dislike. Annoying gimmick, painfully frustrating status effect and if you die to it, enjoy the minute long walk across a goddamn sandy battlefield to get to him.

      • Anonymous

I started the fight, did 3 hits, they almost bounced and did 200 dmg, which was promptly regenerated... Then he smacked me for 3/4 and inflicted shock that slowed my down to crawl basically.

And then it instantly clicked - ****ing GIMMICK fight. So you just have to find the gimmick.

In this case, its extremely increased fatal damage, which he doesnt regenerate at all.

So I constantly slowwalked toward him, parried his godawfuly delayed attacks (bit of pain tbh) and charged R2 his right leg when I could.
Staggers in few hits, gets fataled for 1/2 hp, so repeat twice and be done with this bullshit.
Stabbing weapons with good range works great.

Btw in ng+ you never lose the badge to open the door so u can skip this boss if theres no fog wall im not sure if there is 1 i didnt check but i still had the item and got the prompt to open the door can someone confirm this please

Leaving this here because I'm confused, I fought this boss using "Live Puppet's Axe / City Longspear" handle in one run, "Tyrant Murderer's Dagger" in NG+. For some reason, he went down in second with the Dagger.

If someone can explain how, because I was sure Stagger Damage was based on weapon weight.

            • Anonymous

This isn't a fight where you watch your health, but your stamina. Stack up that Shock protection and drink a resistance cocktail and he's not as much a problem. Tedious af but not a problem.

Someone get Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day over here. They know how to deal with horrible bosses.

                • Anonymous

Extremely boring, yet somehow surprisingly frustrating gimmick fight. Killing this boss did not feel like I did anything well - it just felt like I had my patience tested.

                  • Anonymous

Absolutely cancer fight, even worse on NG+ where he must have like twice as much poise as normal. My advice for this guy is to absolutely never try to parry his attacks because of the insane delay on all of them and just focus on dodging to the left. I recommend using a fast weapon like the acidic spear so you can get in multiple hits between each of his attacks.

                    • Anonymous

                      Uh, am I missing something…?

Hitting this thing with the game’s most powerful weapon upgraded to the max is like throwing wet toilet paper at a raging inferno.

Hitting this thing with every single throwable you can carry has about as much effect as a gnat fart in a hurricane.

Even if you somehow manage to do a couple hundred points of damage to his ridiculously absurd amount of health, it fills right back up to 100% the ****ing instant you stop attacking.

As if the fight wasn’t already comically unfair, for whatever reason, your stamina refills less than half as fast as normal, even with the Patience Amulet.

I have to tip my cap to the devs. If their goal with this boss was to make me want to give up, and NEVER play this game again, then I say mission accomplished.

Is there a rocket launcher that fires warheads tipped with nukes hidden somewhere that can actually damage this thing?

                      • Anonymous

At level 40, 3 hits and you’re dead. What a fcuking joke. It’s like the devs said: “How can we make everyone who made it this far NEVER want to play this game again…?”

                        • Anonymous

Cool idea in theory but the ridiculous "spin around on a dime" tracking in this game means his leg will constantly zip away from you.

                          • Anonymous

Just when you think this game can't throw any more dumb and atrocious bosses at you, you are rewarded with this absolutely horrid fight.

                            • Anonymous

Stupid gimmick fight. Attack his small leg and he goes down in a few hits. Dies after like 2 fatal attacks.

                              • Anonymous

I tried fire against him with maxed Black Steel Cutter and Salamander under an "advance" build 40 in Advance and got absolutely no where. Switched to the Pistol Rock Drill for the 30 Critical (with Wintry Rapier handle for the R2 attack) and it was all over in 30 seconds, despite this being a Motility scaling weapon on my 40 in Advance build,

Just discovered one of the better cheeses against him. Spear of honor handle's heavy attack variants counts as multiple hits towards his stagger. I was using the much slower pistol rock drill blade and still killed him in under 50 seconds with 2 stagger procs. Put tyrant murder's dagger blade on it and if you can handle the range, he'd probably die in under 40s.

                                  • Anonymous

Puppet ripper carried me thru the game until this nuisance but I upgraded the Tyrant Murderer’s dagger to plus 9 just for him. Spammed the crit enhancing weapon art plus the crit grindstone and destroyed him. Gimmick boss that was annoying enough without adding shock to every attack though smh

Puppet ripper was carrying me thru the game until this gimmick boss, got the tyrant murderer’s dagger blade to +9 just for him, spammed the crit enhancing weapon art plus the crit grindstone and destroyed him with it. He’s annoying enough though without adding shock to his attacks tho smh

For our resident motivity users, pistol rock drill handle + tyrant dagger blade killed him in under 1 minute for me, in NG. I spammed light attack myself but hold heavy might be faster.

Pistol rock drill handle + spear of honor blade has been a backup since the swap and I do recommend keeping a stab motivity weapon in your back pocket in your motivity runs. This is an example of where it comes in handy.

This guy gave me a lot of grief in my first playthrough, but he was nothing in NG+. Just poke his bad leg with the Trident. Shot Puts are also useful.

It's like if Yhorm and Fire Giant had a baby, but uglier, boring, uninteresting and poorly designed in terms of mechanics.

Definitely the worst boss in the game.

                                            • Anonymous

Honestly, if you've built your character for low stagger weapons, it might be a good idea to put on the initial legion arm. The one you can't upgrade that just punches.

                                              • Anonymous

This fight is purely psychological. I feel like it's almost a spoiler to say this, but stagger does like 10000000000 damage. When I saw how little damage I did with my basic attacks I was immediately demoralized. Just keep chipping at him till you stagger him, then he's dead. Feels like a joke boss.

                                                • Anonymous

if you're building a heavy weapon build it's worth to level up a faster attacking weapon, i rocked the heavy hammers all the way until this boss which had me leveling up the curved blade (which is not that light but still way lighter) and i made it first try, no heavy weapons for this guy is the easier way

                                                  • Anonymous

ugh... I hated its fury attack where it raised its arm but did a spin kick
                                                    and the run-back is lame

one time I managed to stagger it 3 times
1st time it just doesn't register my position
2nd and 3rd time it fell into the corner where I couldn't fatal

I'm not sure if the perfect guard works at all but I did it anyway
Only manage to make it groggy with str holy sword heavy attack
                                                    Shock resistance is a must-have

                                                    • The most difficult part of this boss fight is finding out you can lock on his vulnerable leg. Once you find the weakness it's good ol' circling until fatal attack prompt comes up. Fatal attack does notably more damage on him than most enemies which means it's the intended way to fight this boss.

                                                      • Anonymous

This boss is practically immune to damage, need to be staggered and crit 2 times. Equip destruction grindstone to stagger him quickly and circle attacking left leg. Should be over in under a minute.
Using trident with 30% crit chance and charged R2 makes it trivial.

                                                        • Anonymous

He's a Tower Knight that either breaks you of the notion of normal guarding or makes you *very* good at dodging for the tail end of the run. That's the long and short of it. After running from NG to NG++, I went from hating his guts to just kinda. Not thinking he's all that trash. Sure, he's a drag, but compared to some of the stuff before, he's just a Puppet of The Future that can actually put up a fight.

                                                          • Anonymous

having fire n your weapon when you do the fatal attack increases the damage immensely. Discovered this on NG+ as this was not a challenge on the regular game but holy **** does he get way harder in NG+.

                                                            • Anonymous

It's a gimmick boss. Hit him in the right leg (your left) until he falls down (the fall DOES deal damage to you if you're in the way), fatal attacks do insane damage, took me 2 fatals to kill him. His shock build-up is massive so just play really safe and run away from hits until he uses his attacks that leave him wide open like his slam.

                                                              • Anonymous

This guy 2 shot me 2 times and then I realized you just had to keep stabbing his leg until he falls over. I then immediately beat him without even a hint of struggle. Awful boss.

                                                                • Anonymous

Why can't I hit multiple times? I hit once or twice, have loads of stamina left but can't attack. Is this the "stifness" status ailment maybe? It's not clear why you can't attack.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Yall think if we down-vote it enough on Steam we can get them to remove this dude? Because this is a giant waste of time in NG+

                                                                    • Anonymous

Loved the game, until this "fight". It seems like a placeholder that was just left in, and super buggy too

                                                                      • Anonymous

I've never been so bored. If they were gonna do this they should have just cut the game awhile back because the last few fights are just bad, mechanically and visually.

                                                                        • Anonymous

As long as you are shredding his poise or causing stagger damage, you will be able to bypass armor and land a fatal attack that hurts WAY more than normal.
Im dex, but I borrowed a weapon head w huge guard for this fight. True, he builds shock that jams your stamina, but if you bring shock resist equip and shock cure item, his shock build up is manageable. While you can run around, block hit is still viable and builds a fast stagger. Block, r2 the weak leg, or fable art... its not too much work as long as you dont stop and wait around too much. Bonus if you can run to the back and smack the leg, back shots inflict more stagger.

Watch where you fight him, if you are cornered or facing a wall, bring his stagger will result in his head being too near the wall and no room for your special stab. It will be a missed chance. Also watch where you are facing during a special stab opening. other enemies, I miss the fatal blow, a normal r1 triggers... I just mash r1 and he does a fatal attack next blow, this guy... I kept mashing, he did not fatal attack and the boss stood up. Also where you are facing matters. Ive tried to fatal attack, I was standing on the spot, but I wasnt facing directly at him, it did not trigger. Had to back up and try to position it right.

I was running around a lot, dark souls style for my first three attempts. Fight took 4 minutes, ended up dying and I was missing special stabs due to the wall and weird coding/ stand area. Next two tries, was block and counter w shock prep... ended it in like 1 min +? Was much smoother. I bet the perfect guard grindstone will really help this.

                                                                          • Anonymous

A lot of people here seem to be unclear on this.
                                                                            1. Regardless of your build, normal attacks do almost no damage.
                                                                            2. You can run (not dodge, not block, just run) away from pretty much any of his attacks.
                                                                            3. His right leg (your left) is his weak point.
                                                                            4. Fatal Attacks do MASSIVE damage. Like, "45% of his HP bar in one hit"-massive.

Literally slap his leg a few times, run away and watch him fall. You can tell you're close when he drops to one knee and gets back up. Once he falls, back up and wait by where his head lands, Fatal Attack. It took 2 Fatal Attacks, and finished with a 3-bar Fable Arts to get rid of his last sliver of health. Used a greatsword. Fight took like 2 minutes, tops.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Probably would have stuck with it if the star gazer was closer, but the 2 min run to get there just to die in 10 seconds stole my will to live

The game needs a fun rebalance

                                                                              • Anonymous

By far the worst part of NG+, and I can't even imagine how bad it is on NG++. He takes forever to stagger compared to in the original run, and you have to do it three times rather than just two.
Gimmick boss fights tend to be awful, and this guy sure lives up to that and then some

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This boss is actually very easy. Different fight from the rest of the game but after going against insane bosses is nice to cool down on a slow fight.

Focus his unprotected leg and when he eventually falls you will do a ton of damager on stagger atk.

Be careful with stamina managment as shock reduces the recover speed. The amulet that enables you to dodge even with no stamina makes this fight very manageable.

                                                                                      • Anonymous

This feels kinda like a wasted boss, as it only has one phase, and only takes real damage when receiving a fatal blow. You dodge basically everything whereas most bosses demanded parrying. Doesn't feel like it has the same philosophy as the rest of the bosses in this game

                                                                                        • Anonymous

STRATEGY: This is actually one of the easiest bosses in the game. His right leg (left side as you're facing him) is the weakspot. Target that and doge or block a few of his attacks in between you dealing damage to the leg to stagger him. 3 staggers should do the trick, as your stagger attack does a ton of damage.

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            This boss...

There is nothing interesting about this fight :
-The run to the fight is needlessly long.
-guarding is heavily penalized as it build up shock that lower your stamina regen to a crawl, so either you forget it or be a parry god.
-at the oposit spectrum, dodging this attacks is braindead, so if you got the ghost walk amulet, you can dodge even his red attacks.

So if you use a weapon with a handle that giv a a heavy dash attack (like the bramble curved sword or the booster glaive), the boss is just dodge>heavy>dodge>...

Like, if fight in souls game can be compared as a dance, then this is the most boring slow with the least attractive girl/guy, and she/he is sweating, slimy, smell, and walk on your foots while you dance.

                                                                                            • Anonymous

I was standing right in the middle of the marker as usual, but all I could do was a regular weak attack. He recovered like 3 seconds later and proceeded to kill me, since I was already at low HP with no heals left.

A tip for the developer: Either learn to program so your game mechanics work properly, or don't design a fight that is entirely reliant on one specific mechanic.

I am fuming so hard right now, this game went to a 0/10 in an instant for me. It'll probably feel somewhat better once I calm down, but this is some serious bullshit...

I finally managed to get the boss to stagger for the second time after a bunch of tries, but then the game wouldn't let me execute a fatal attack! • Anonymous

Lovely, yet another boss with a gazillion HP. When are they going to learn that a longer fight doesn't equal more fun?
And yes, I know that you can deal a lot more damage if you stagger him and hit him with a fatal attack, but it still takes a lot of hits to make that happen and you have to do the whole sequence several times to take him down for good.

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

He two shots you no matter what, the electricity cannot be removed with the purification ampoule for whatever reason, and he does not die from 2 fatal attacks. 11 pulse cells aren't enough despite perfect blocking 90% of his moves. What a nightmare.

You need to just get in a few good hits to his little leg (weak point) so that he topples and you can perform a finisher. If you have the Aegis shield arm then use it to block between attacks (don't parry) then hit his weak point between blocks.
